Middleware Engineer

job summary:

Responsible for the day-to-day support and maintenance of critical Middleware Infrastructure; including but not limited to tasks related to identifying and troubleshooting production issues, issue resolution, and escalation. Responsibilities include root cause analysis, management communication, and client relationship management in partnership with Production Support team members. In depth functional knowledge of the products supported and interdependencies. This position is required to work with internal and external vendor teams to resolve production issues. Required to participate in after-hours support duties on a rotating, on call support schedule. Utilize monitoring tools and assist in the creation of pro-active monitoring practices to ensure system availability, functionality, and performance.

  • nstallation and configuration of application servers and layered products

  • Root Cause Analysis of Production Incidents

  • Product planning related to upgrades and fix packs

  • Development of scripts to automate routine functions

  • Support of weekend releases and evening/overnight activities

  • Support of Non-Prod environments

  • Open and manage service tickets with vendors to resolve product related issues

  • Documentation of Production Support issues/tasks

  • Participate in 24x7 on-call support rotation, including weekends and holidays

  • Support engineering staff on design, installation, configuration, and operation of Middleware Products

  • Proactive monitoring and management of supported products and technologies assuring performance, availability, security, and capacity

  • Assist and maintain planning for Disaster Recovery Efforts

  • Provide single point of contact, liaison, and escalation for the SOA Application Infrastructure Production Support Team

  • Work with reporting and process governance peers to support regular review of service and process delivery against objectives

  • Facilitate monthly review of delivery of services with Management, Engineering, and Production Support Team

  • Engage in Capacity planning discussions, forecasts, solutions

  • Partner with application development and production support leaders

  • Communicate with Production Support partners

  • Provide knowledge transfer to team members


  • Bachelor's Degree or higher strongly preferred or equivalent work experience.

  • 5+ Years of experience implementing and/or supporting middleware infrastructure products and/or application environments on Linux, Windows, and/or Unix platforms

  • Experience with product and/or labor vendor relationships

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship skills

  • Strong analytical, development, and problem solving skills

  • Demonstrated Teamwork behaviors

  • Experience managing an infrastructure support or products team.

  • Experience administering and configuring one or more middleware products

  • Experience managing messaging, integration and/or SOA technologies such as JBoss Fuse, JBoss EAP, Websphere MQ, Websphere Message Broker, IBM Integration Bus

  • Experience managing large and complex end to end transaction processing shared services


  • Bachelor's Degree or higher strongly preferred or equivalent work experience.
